This past weekend Highland Park ISD celebrated their 100th birthday with all kinds of fun events. On Friday all of the schools let the students out early so that alumni and the community could tour the schools and check out their exhibits looking back at the districts past. Friday, I had the opportunity to visit HPHS and check out their exhibit and the school. In the almost 15 years since I have walked those halls, I found that very few things looked as I remembered because my senior year was the year the school began a massive remodeling project. I did have the opportunity to visit the High School in 2010 during my 10 year reunion for a tour. But, I was amazed how different everything looked in a relatively short amount of time.
It was interesting wondering though the halls, one thing I noticed was that the small auditorium had been replaced and turned into a multipurpose room. This was where the "museum" was displayed. It was really fun to see all of the older stuff that had been gathered. It was easy to see all the hard work that was put into this museum.
Sunday, the district had a huge block party at the football field, where you could see student art and a place for kids to play. Across from the football field is the indoor practice field, where the museum was placed. Each school had an area with memorabilia and history from that school. It was really fun to look back at all of the school's and how things have changed, yet remained the same. I would say what remains the same is the dedication to academic excellence and athleticism which is seen throughout the displays. It was fun to go down memory lane with those young and old. B's uncle and Aunt were also there volunteering, and it was fun to hear of stories from them about growing up in HP in the 1940's and beyond.
One thing I did notice is that there did not seem to be quite as many people there from the past community, those who I know would have enjoyed looking back at all the memories. I took B and my Mom with me. We all had a great time and were so glad we got to be apart of this once in a lifetime event. B, my Mom and I all got fun buttons made to remember the fun event. All and all we had a great time looking back at old memories while making new memories.
